Wills, Probate and Lasting Powers of Attorney
Wills A Will is not just for older people. In the current climate we live in it is essential to make a Will to ensure that your wishes are carried out. Many people mistakenly believe their next of kin will automatically inherit their belongings if they do not make a Will. This is not always the case. In the case of unmarried couples and step-children unless there is a Will it is not possible for them to automatically inherit from each other. Barlows offer practical advice on making a Will, important points to consider when doing so and the implications of inheritance tax. Any Wills made by Barlows will be stored free of charge in a fire proof cabinet. Clients can then rest assured their wishes will be kept in a safe place. Probate At Barlows we also understand that the death of a loved one and having to deal with the matter of Probate can be an extremely upsetting time and we can therefore offer advice to clients during this difficult period. We take the worry out of your hands and will correspond with all parties concerned, from collecting in assets to distributing the estate as per the deceased's Will and / or Codicil. We are always available during office hours to discuss any concerns the Executors or Administrators may have. Lasting Powers of Attorney A lasting power of attorney (LPA) allows you to appoint someone of your choosing to deal with your financial affairs, for example, the signing of cheques and making decisions with regard to investments. You can also appoint someone to make decisions with regard to your health and welfare should you be unable to make those decisions yourself. It is estimated that by 2030 4% of the population aged between 65 and 70 and 10% of those between 60 and 80 will suffer from dementia. It is therefore important to safeguard the future by appointing someone to take over your decisions when you are no longer able to make them yourself.
